PerkinElmer, Inc. (Waltham, MA) announces the opening of a new Center of Excellence in Singapore, which comes as part of PerkinElmer's continued global R&D expansion efforts, and will focus on the development of new precision instrumentation and chemistries for a range of scientific and industrial laboratory applications, including drug discovery and development, environmental monitoring, food safety, and sustainable energy.

The new Center of Excellence will manufacture instruments for atomic absorption spectroscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy to detect both inorganic and organic materials in the environment, food, materials, and oil industries. The new facility also will focus R&D efforts in support of the expansion of PerkinElmer's EcoAnalytix solutions family.

  • Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. (Waltham, MA) announces the opening of its new facility in Adelaide, South Australia. Marking a major expansion for the company's materials and minerals business, the state-of-the-art facility significantly increases Thermo Fisher Scientific's manufacturing footprint in the region. The new building replaces an existing facility and consolidates analyzer production operations in Adelaide.

Thermo Fisher Scientific's materials and minerals business in Adelaide will manufacture cross-belt analyzers, integrated sampling and analysis stations, multistream analyzers, and belt scales. The custom, modern building supports the growing demand for minerals by bolstering the company's production capabilities in a lean manufacturing environment.

SPIE's highest award, the Gold Medal of the Society, was presented to M.J. Soileau, vice president of the University of Central Florida (UCF) Office of Research and Commercialization, and founding director of CREOL — The College of Optics and Photonics at UCF. The award was among several presented by SPIE President Kevin Harding, GE Global Research senior engineer, at an awards banquet during the SPIE Defense and Security Symposium (Orlando, FL).

The Gold Medal recognizes Soileau's dedication and service to optics education, research, and administration, along with his scientific contributions in the areas of laser-induced damage and sensor-protecting devices.

  • Sunovia Energy Technologies, Inc. (Sarasota, FL) and EPIR Technologies, Inc. (Bolingbrook, IL) are pleased to announce the award of a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract to EPIR from NASA, which continues to advance the companies' strategy to commercialize synergistic cadmium-telluride-based technologies and manufacturing processes for solar, infrared, and X-ray within the renewable energy, night vision, medical, and scientific markets. The Phase II contract specifically calls for the development and fabrication of prototype high-resolution X-ray calorimeters that will be integrated into future NASA missions and follows a very successful Phase I contract. X-ray calorimeters are used to measure the energy, or wavelength, of the incoming X-ray photons. Semimetallic mercury telluride has proven to be an excellent absorber material due to its low heat capacity; however, EPIR's research team has demonstrated a breakthrough that proves that MBE-grown mercury-cadmium-telluride (MCT) combines high conductivity with a low heat capacity and therefore allows high energy resolution.
